As of yesterday, Amazon announced up to $230 million will be spent on startups building generative AI-powered applications.
“The investment, roughly $80 million of which will fund Amazon’s second AWS Generative AI Accelerator program, aims to position AWS as an attractive cloud infrastructure choice for startups developing generative AI models to power their products, apps and services.” shares Yahoo! Finance. A large allocation of Amazon’s spend comes as compute credit which is a way to support and promote the use of AWS’s cloud services, while also restricting the ability to switch to or utilize services from competing cloud providers. Compute credits are essentially prepaid or allocated resources for using AWS’s cloud computing services.
To enhance its Generative AI Accelerator program, Amazon is offering this year’s cohort access to experts and technology from Nvidia, the program’s presenting partner, and inviting them to join the Nvidia Inception program, which offers networking opportunities with potential investors and consulting resources. The program has expanded significantly, with this year’s cohort receiving substantial support compared to last year’s, which included only up to $300,000 in AWS compute credits for each of the 10 startups, totaling around $3 million.
Amazon’s increased investment in generative AI technology, including the $100 million AWS Generative AI Innovation Center and various free credits for startups, aims to help it catch up with rivals in the competitive generative AI market. Although Amazon claims significant progress in its AI ventures, it has faced setbacks, such as delays with its Bedrock model hosting service and issues within its Alexa division. Additionally, Amazon’s missed investment opportunities in leading AI startups and regulatory scrutiny over Big Tech’s AI investments pose challenges for its growth in this field.
