Bautis Financial Advisor Commentary: The Middle East Conflict

March 4, 2026 by Marc Bautis
Bautis Financial Advisor Commentary

The escalation of military operations in the Middle East has introduced new uncertainty into global markets. Short-term swings can feel alarming – but history shows long-term plans endure.

This is a new installment in an ongoing series where Marc Bautis, Wealth Manager and Founder of Bautis Financial, comments on hot topics in the financial industry.

Before any discussion of markets or portfolios, a note first:

Right now, thousands of U.S. service members are involved in military operations across the Persian Gulf. Others may have friends or loved ones in the region. For many, the recent unrest in the Middle East isn’t just news – it’s personal. And even if it doesn’t touch you directly, the intensity and pace of events can be unsettling.

If this situation affects you or your family, please know you’re in our thoughts. Because people matter more than portfolios.

That said, right now it’s completely reasonable to be asking yourself:

  • What’s happening?
  • What does this mean for my finances?

These are not ordinary headlines. They have real-world implications and can ripple quickly through markets and the economy. Concern in moments like this is both understandable and appropriate.

What We Know So Far

Over the weekend, the U.S. launched military strikes against Iran. Tensions escalated quickly, including threats to key oil shipping routes. Energy traders responded almost immediately*:

  • Oil prices spiked.
  • Stock indices fell.
  • Gold jumped.
  • Bond prices dipped.

This reaction is understandable. Energy costs affect nearly every corner of the economy. Rising fuel prices can squeeze corporate margins, impact household budgets, and shift inflation expectations – even before actual supply disruptions occur.

In these moments, traders act quickly, much like a smoke alarm reacting to smoke: they respond first and sort out the details later.

*At the time of this commentary, the full scope and likely outcome of the conflict is unclear.

The Reality of Uncertainty

At this point, the ultimate outcome is unknown. In the coming weeks, you’ll hear many predictions: some foresee escalation, others anticipate a quick resolution; some worry about inflation, others expect a rebound. All are possible.

History shows that markets often react sharply at the onset of geopolitical events. As more information emerges, prices tend to adjust. In the short term, volatility is normal – even expected. That doesn’t make it feel comfortable, especially when headlines are intense.

Why a Long-Term Plan Matters

Weeks like this are exactly why long-term investment strategies exist. No plan assumes a world without uncertainty. Markets have navigated wars, energy shocks, elections, policy shifts, and even pandemics. Volatility is part of the landscape.

A well-designed plan:

  • Diversifies across different asset types to reduce risk in any single area.
  • Aligns your portfolio’s growth and stability with your time horizon.
  • Accounts for the fact that market swings will happen.

When new cycles grow louder, the urge to act immediately can feel like the safest choice. But history shows that reactionary decisions often cause more harm than the market moves themselves.

For now, focus on what matters most: your people, your priorities, and your long-term objectives. If you’re considering portfolio changes, take a thoughtful pause and evaluate carefully. The headlines will continue to evolve – but your long-term goals likely haven’t.

As always, if you’d like to discuss your situation or review your plan, our team is available.
