Congress consists of the House and the Senate. The Senate has 100 members, two representing each of the 50 states. The House has 435 members each representing an average of 747,000 people. Montana has the largest district, representing 1 million residents. Rhode Island has the smallest, representing 530,000 residents.
Senators serve six-year terms, and House members serve two-year terms. Their job is to legislate on your behalf and help you with any problems you face with the government. Of the three branches of government, Congress is the most responsive to the people.
