Hoping to reduce risk and improve efficiency, Wall Street has finalized a faster trade settlement. Shifting from two days to one for all purchases and sales, investors will need to adapt.
The SEC claims shortening the settlement period to one day will keep funds flowing freely in the market and relieve pressure for the transaction on the broker-dealer level. This change will affect banks and international traders with a smaller window to convert foreign currencies to the dollar which can potentially lead to errors, explains the Morning Brew.
On Wednesday, May 29, last Friday’s trades and Tuesday’s trades will need to be finalized, but they are on different settlement times. Other countries such as Canada, Mexico, and Argentina have already adjusted their market transactions as of May 27, 2024. The UK will follow in 2027 and Europe is still considering the change.
“Regulators sought the new standard, commonly called T+1, after the 2021 trading frenzy around the “meme stock” GameStop (GME.N), opening a new tab highlighting the need to reduce counterparty risk and improve capital efficiency and liquidity in securities transactions.
‘Shortening the settlement cycle… will help the markets because time is money and time is risk,’ said SEC chair Gary Gensler in a statement, adding it will make the market infrastructure more resilient,” according to Reuters.
