For Women Leading Household Finances: Bridging Confidence Gaps

March 10, 2026 by Bautis Financial
Woman

Women increasingly lead household finances, yet confidence lags. Learn how thoughtful financial planning can align responsibility with peace of mind.

March is Women’s History Month, and you’ll likely see plenty of content celebrating the achievements of milestones of women throughout history.

Those celebrations matter.

But there’s another story unfolding today that doesn’t always receive the same level of recognition: the quiet, daily financial leadership that millions of women provide for their families.

In households across the country, women are increasingly taking the lead in managing investments, overseeing financial decisions, and shaping their families’ long-term financial futures. And while that leadership is growing, the confidence to match it hasn’t always kept pace.

Women Are Taking the Lead in Household Finances

Recent research highlights just how significant this shift has become.

A study from the CFP Board found that more than two-thirds of women now serve as the primary decision-makers when it comes to their household’s investment decisions.

Another study conducted by Allianz in 2025 found that 53% of women now consider themselves the chief financial officers of their households, up from 49% just two years earlier.

These numbers suggest something bigger than a temporary trend. Women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles when it comes to managing wealth, making financial decisions, and guiding their families’ financial direction.

But the same research reveals an important gap.

Financial Responsibility Is Rising – But Confidence Is Declining

Despite their growing role in household financial leadership, many women report feeling uncertain about their long-term financial outlook.

In the Allianz study:

  • Only 46% of women said they feel confident about their retirement plans, down from 52% in 2023.
  • 57% expressed concern about the possibility of running out of money in retirement.

In other words, while responsibility is increasing, confidence hasn’t fully caught up.

This raises an important question: why?

The Math Behind the Confidence Gap

Part of the answer lies in the structural realities that shape many women’s financial lives.

For example:

  • Women live an average of five years longer than men, which means retirement savings often need to last longer.
  • Women are more likely to step into caregiving roles, with more than four in ten women providing care during their careers.
  • Many women also adjust their careers along the way, whether that means reducing hours, pausing work to support family needs, or passing up promotions.

None of these factors are minor.

Over time, they can influence earning potential, savings rates, retirement contributions, and the length of time a portfolio needs to support retirement spending.

When a financial plan doesn’t fully account for these realities, it’s understandable that confidence may not match the level of responsibility someone is carrying.

A Financial Plan That Reflects Real Life

The good news is that confidence often improves when a financial plan is designed to reflect the real shape of someone’s life.

That means addressing questions like:

  • How long does retirement income need to last?
  • What happens if caregiving responsibilities change your work timeline?
  • How can savings and investments adapt to different life transitions?

When those realities are acknowledged and planned for, the financial picture tends to become clearer. And clearer plans often lead to a greater peace of mind.

A Conversation Worth Having

If you’ve been carrying the financial leadership role for your household – or if life changes are reshaping your financial picture – it may be worth stepping back to make sure your plan reflects the full story.

Not because something is wrong. But because having someone in your corner who can help bring clarity to the big picture can make a meaningful difference.
