How Superfunding Can Accelerate 529 Savings

May 14, 2026 by Bautis Financial
Superfunding a 529

529 plans can do more than help save for college. For some families, “superfunding” a 529 may also play a role in estate and legacy planning. Learn how this strategy works, and when it may make sense.

This is a segment of Bautis Financial’s college planning series, which includes webinars, podcast episodes, blog posts and downloadables to aid college-bound students and families in the admissions process. Visit our college planning hub for more valuable resources.

Many families contribute to 529 plans gradually over time, but there’s another strategy that can accelerate college savings called “superfunding.”

Superfunding a 529 plan allows an individual to contribute up to five years’ worth of annual gift tax exclusions at once. In 2026, that means up to $95,000 per beneficiary for an individual, or $190,000 for a married couple, without triggering federal gift taxes if certain IRS rules are followed.

The potential advantage is time. By contributing a larger amount earlier, the investments have more opportunity for tax-free growth before education expenses begin.

For some families, this can also serve as part of a broader estate planning strategy by moving assets out of a taxable estate while helping future generations fund education.

However, superfunding isn’t the right fit for everyone. It can limit additional gifting flexibility during the five-year election period, and the strategy should be coordinated carefully with your overall financial plan.

As college costs continue to rise, understanding the full range of education savings options can help families make more informed long-term decisions.

If you’re considering education funding strategies for your children or grandchildren, our team at Bautis Financial can help you evaluate how a 529 plan may fit into your broader financial and legacy goals. Schedule a conversation with our advisors to discuss your options.
