The overall trend for sector performance in 2020 is mixed, as performance leaders and laggers have rotated all year. In the first quarter of 2020, every one of the S&P 500 sectors turned in negative numbers. The second quarter saw all 11 sectors turn in positive numbers. Then, in the third quarter, 10 of the 11 sectors turned in positive numbers. Last month saw an overwhelmingly negative trend, as 10 of the 11 sectors finished lower.
In many ways, October was a continuation of September, as it saw nine of the 11 sectors go lower. But, there was clearly a rotation in October as information technology was the worst performer this month.
