We’re in the final week of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which began July 23, 2021 and are scheduled to end this Sunday, August 8th. So far, the United States has won 73 Olympic medals: 24 Gold, 28 Silver and 21 Bronze. These 73 medals have landed the US at #2 on the medal standing leaderboard, just behind China who has four less medals in total, but more gold (32 Gold, 21 Silver and 16 Bronze).
Simone Biles had a successful return to the Olympic competition today, winning the bronze medal on the balance beam. This was her first competition back since withdrawing from the team competition a week earlier. Biles won her seventh career Olympic medal, tying her with Shannon Miller for the most by a U.S. gymnast.
Also today, the U.S. track and field team added a pair of silver medals to its haul, with veteran long jumper Brittney Reese scoring her third consecutive Olympic medal and Rai Benjamin taking second in an exhilarating 400-meter hurdle race.
There are far more athletic accomplishments to name, but we’d be here all week!
